A semester abroad in Bristol

A semester abroad in Bristol

Amber joined the University of Bristol as part of our semester abroad programme. As a Physics student at the University of Chicago, she wanted to understand more about engineering design and molecular genetics.

On life as an international student

As an international student at a British university, I felt quickly accepted by my classmates and professors. I made friends in my accommodation hall as well as my classes. Several of them were curious about the parallels between British and American culture.

The classes at the University were incredibly thought out and full of useful knowledge. I enjoyed them all and was often excited going into lectures, labs, and workshops. The courses were designed to support students’ success.

The coolest thing about Bristol

The atmosphere of Bristol was joyful and warm. The city is centred around community and the quality of food available was amazing. I was able to explore the city through walking and public transport, which is a bit harder to do in smaller towns in the US. I still miss the corner shops and the accessibility of the many green spaces around Bristol.

The coolest thing about the city were the occasional hot air balloons and urban foxes. I did not come to Bristol expecting either of those, but they were both such a delightful surprise.

My studies

I chose to study design, engineering science, and molecular genetics because of the unique perspectives offered by UK institutions. Having previously studied the same topics in the US, I wanted to explore other approaches.

I enjoyed the emphasis on sustainability in all my courses, especially in the design and the genetics classes. The professors were also very helpful and were able to provide me with guidance for my career aspirations.

Why I chose the UK

I chose to study in the UK because of the unique yet also familiar culture. Coming from the United States, the UK felt familiar yet different enough for me to want to explore on a solo journey. I was also very interested academically at what the British institutions had to offer their engineering students.

My advice to you

If you are looking for an experience that opens your mind and surrounds you with new people, studying abroad is for you! It is such a unique experience that words cannot fully describe. Bristol is a beautiful city that I recommend everyone sees at least once, but getting to live and immerse yourself in the community is unlike any other experience.

If you are still unsure about which city, don’t be afraid to do a little research and see where you might enjoy yourself. Keep in mind that you will come across new and exciting events there. If you are interested in studying at the University of Bristol, have a look at the courses they offer their study abroad students and get excited about what your academic life could look like as well!
